Let’s get to know Raido Rose a little better…

Why did you start your site Around The Way Girls?
Growing up, I always felt like there weren’t enough creative people to give insight to us youngins. I was always interested in the arts but I never has someone to talk to about their experiences, or the options and opportunities that were avail. So in 2006 me and my good friend Stella (a now screenwriter alum at Westminister) got to writing. But it was very important that I was speaking to girls in a tangible, everyday girl around the way tone.

How do you try to relate to your readers?
Well, I see them as my homegirls instead of someone I have to school. I am them. I try to think that I’m having a conversation with a girl on my block, and you know how at times we just have to throw some silliness in the mix. I’m silly by nature so I try to express that when I’m writing.

Where are your top places you love to buy your key clothing items?
THRIFT SHOPS! Like really!I’ve found the craziest things, MCM and CHANEL bags, Helmut Lang denim, Marc Jacobs dresses. If you want to look original and not spend a lot of coins, it doesn’t get any better! I also love vintage shops like FunkyFannys and Edith Machinist and consignment stores like INA and Tokyo 7. When I have a little more coins I like to hit up IN.Ventory they have a good variety of international and local designers.

Who are your favorite musicians right now and why?
I love this new culture of NY artists that are all on the brink of breaking through big. For starters, my sistren Jasmine Solano, a female MC here in NY who gives hope to women in hiphop, there’s something so amazing and complex about how she can open your mind and still bring a party appeal. Listen to her track “That’s not it” www.myspace.com/jasminesolano

Another artist I love is Shyvonne, have you ever heard someone sing and the give you chills? That’s def her, she has amazingly strong vocal skills, you will shiver! Some people have a voice of an Angel but she has the voice of a Legend. Listen to her track “Mindreader” produced by Kingdom www.myspace.com/shyvonesmusic

How does music and fashion influence each other in your life?
They both affect me in similar ways. They both inspire, motivate, and soothe me. There isn’t a minute of the day where I’m not affected by one or the Other, a song may remind me of a place and time which can then remind me of a look or trend. And that cycle always repeats often.

What is the most crazy/stylishy/sexy/cool/weird shoot you’ve ever done and why?
One of the funnest and craziest shoots I’ve had to date was for Acclaim Magazine with the ladies of House of JackieBrown. It was art directed by them and the idea was to go wild and crazy with colors, styling and the idea. They are creatively my favorite package, they love bright colors, mix matched textures and big hair.Photographer Mel D Cole shot in the streets and subways of NY in a cold october afternoon (a day before halloween) so although our models looked out of place wearing bikinis in Harlem, they seemed to fit right in.

I feel like you’ve been one of the first to kinda hard core hit this new-80s-street-hip-hop hipster fashion style–how did you get involved with this particular genre?
This can be simply explained: “I just copied what my sister looked like when I was growing up”
Shaved head, oversized jkts and bright colors, then the wave hit the masses and it suddenly became just another oversaturated Fad.

If you could style anyone on in the world right now –who would it be an why?

Hmm it would have to be someone that needs help,I wouldn’t want to work on someone I admire. I wouldn’t mind taking one of these HipHop dudes like a Jim Jones or a Trey Songz and make him look very Johnny Depp-ish or “1930s Hobo”, I think that’s a super sexy look for Men. And I wouldn’t mind playing dress up on them ;) .
For the ladies, there isn’t 1 person in particular that I would want to hone in on, it seems like people either want to take too many risks or non at all, so it leaves the range too broad to choose from.

What made you decide to become a DJ?
I spent plenty of years behind DJ booths all over NYC/Vegas/Miami with my boo SureShot. His talent would amaze me, I was a total groupie, helping him lug crates (well, more like hailing the cab for the crates, those things were heavy), holding record bags, sitting in his old room when he first would unseal a record and play it for hours on end. Being a music fanatic I always admired it and I wanted the chance to try to do it myself.I used to try to scratch my dad’s Diana Ross records when I was 10 (that didn’t go over very well). So years later when I was a ripe 23, I begged for some pointers, reluctant at first, he put me through a bit of a “DJbootcamp” until he felt I was worthy of showing off anything I learned. 5 years later I’m still very humble of having the oppurtunity to share my love for music and I’m still learning. I’m so appreciative of all I’ve learned and most importantly I have the upmost respect for every DJ I meet. It takes more than just playing a playlist of songs you see on the Billboard charts. You need skills, patience, and lots of confidence to wear those shoes.

What makes you a Styleaholic?
I feel that to define a styleaholic means that you have the ability to be influential without losing who you really are. You stay true to yourself while bringing individuality.
