Styleaholic Designer Review Q&A: Ellie Owens

Leon Curry, head designer of Ellie Owen is a burst of real talent, style and flair. The young designer’s use of pattern and texture showcase the unique understanding of a woman’s body. Currently residing in Key West, Florida, he’s currently attending Florida A&M University.
With starlet, Aubrey (Danity Kane) as one of his main followers, I see that this multi-faceted designer will go very far. Not only is he a smart and motivated individual, his unique designs set him light years ahead of therest who are still in search of their “originality.”
Having a chance to chat with him – we get to know the man behind the brand:
Q: Define Ellie Owen?
A: Ellie Owen is me. My name is Leon when broken down L.E.O.N gives you Ellie (L.E) Owen (O.N)= Leon. It also represents a coming of age story and the fact that a lot of authors use pen names and this is like my pen name for design.
Q: What inspires your designs, especially with the different uses of pattern and texture?
A: I start each collection off with a story. I like to make some parts of that story very literal and some abstract when I create pieces and the fabric has to be able to convey my idea. The story behind the last collection was articles you would find in Africa. You have your wild animals, your native people, your slick snakes, your exotic birds. Old movies and hymns also played a part in my design process.
Q: As a male designer. do you feel you bring a different perspective on the ideal behind a woman’s’ body?
A: As a male designer there are certain parts of the female body I cannot ignore. Working with very different clients and models I learned that women come in many shapes and sizes but the relating factor is that the all want to feel beautiful. I make sure I make that happen. More important than how a woman’s body is is how the woman’s portrayed. I always try to portray the woman as strong.
Q: How do you differ from other designers?
A: I try to give WOW pieces and try to make couture more ready to wear. I am young and self taught so I think that gives me freedom to be outside of the box and not a slave to technique. As I find my niche in this business I can see my designs evolve, but they will always be free. Presentation is also a big part as well and I try to make the presentation fun as well as meaningful.
