Styleaholics’ Fashion Blogger Interview–Meghan Cleary/Miss Meghan

August 28th, 2007

Styleaholics, welcome to not only another New Media Tuesday but you are about to discover not only one of the MUST READ BLOGS on the web, but a BRANDED PERSONALITY ON THE RISE and if you don’t now you know!

LOL.

Miss Meghan is not only one of my favorite all time people, but she is also smart, savvy and a shoe addict-read below to find out more.

Styleaholics Heart Miss Meghan!

What exactly is Missmeghan.com?

Missmeghan.com is the first stop for all things having to with me and my shoe world. It actually originated from a nickname my friend Neil gave me – he always used to call me Miss Meghan and the moniker just stuck so I decided to use it when I launched my blog and my site. Originally it was going to be an advice column but then I gave in to my shoe obession.

Why did you decide to get into shoes, and what were you doing before this?

I have been obsessed with shoes since I was about five when I discovered a pair of baby blue wedge espadrilles with embroidery at KMART and immediately the words “must-have” were associated with shoes and someshow imprinted in my brain!!

Also, I have been a creative writer since the age of 10 when I wrote my first poem. I am also a co-founder and director of Reading Between A and B –www.readab.com– a poetry series in the East Village that has hosted Pulitzer Prize winners as well as discovered new emerging voices for the past eight years. So writing is a huge part of my life.

I moved to New York after graduating from the University of Michigan and a year in London traveling and writing. When I arrived in NYC I worked in marketing for Deutsche Bank and a few years later jumped from there to be a consultant for new media (that’s what we called the internet at the time!). I was part of the original team at netsetgoods.com (now flavorpill.net) along with Jason Campbell and he and I went off and started our own marketing agency for awhile as well. Then he moved to Paris and launched jcreport.com, and while I was consulting on Wall Street I started giving in to my shoe obession by blogging and writing a book proposal–I decided I wanted to be the “shoe lady” and be the person people called whenever they needed info on shoes. I wrote my first feature article on shoes in Time Out on six emerging shoe designers in 2003, sold my proposal for the book “The Perfect Fit:What your shoes say about you” to Chronicle Books that same year, and I was off. Since then I have written for a ton of publications including the fabulous but now defunct SHUZ where I wrote a 3-part series on how to be shoe designer, Marie Claire, JCReport, Glamour UK, Life & Style Weekly. I also write for the New York Daily News, and I’ve been on TYRA, EXTRA, TODAY, Rachael Ray, lots of fun shows talking about shoes. I love it.

You call yourself a Shoe Therapist–please explain what this does and feel free to relate any funny case studies/stories.

The concept of Shoe Therapy (TM) originated because getting a new pair shoes is really therapy for every woman. I don’t care if you are a clog girl or a Stiletto girl, or you get them at a cool vintage shop, Manolo Blahnik’s store on Madison, or the Salvation Army — every women loves a new pair of shoes. It gives you an instant uplift and you don’t have to dress and undress in front of a bad flouresecent mirror, you just try them on and go. Shoes change the way you walk, how you feel, your entire mood, your confidence. It’s a beautiful thing!

For the past four years traveling on tour with my book around the country, this concept has been proven to me over and over in so many different contexts–thousands of women have poured out their shoe stories to me. I have seen women light up when they put on a pair of new shoes they like. It’s like this moment of transformation, like a lightbulb that literaly switches on. It changes how she thinks about herself. And it makes you just happy to see something you love on your feet. As Christian Louboutin says, “How can you not smile when you look down at your feet and see a hot pink pump?”

You are DYNAMIC at SELF BRANDING. What are the brands that you’ve created and how are they different, yet work together to bring us a total Miss Meghan experience?

The total Miss Meghan experience is about transformation and having fun – so whether you are tuning in to my show on HSN or listening to my podcast on iTunes or reading my blog — I want you to have fun and also maybe learn a little something new, or think about something differently.

You recently hosted your first ever hour long SHOE SHOW ON HSN. CONGRATS! In 50 words or less, tell us a bit about that experience.

I am the only expert on HSN to have my own branded show — it’s called “Shoe Therapy(TM) with Meghan Cleary”. HSN is an awesome place to be right now — they are totally revamping with different brands, their quality is amazing, and I get to help discover new shoe brands and bring them on my show. It is a total blast.

What can a reader find on your blog?

We are getting ready for a big revamp on my blog and website so stay tuned in late October and early November for some fun new features. Right now you can find:

Shoe are You? — my weekly podcast series (Season Two starts in late October!)
–Shoe of the Week
–Updates on Shoe Therapy (TM), when it airs and Behind the Scenes
–Where to see me: my articles and TV appearances
–My musings on shoe related topics or scandals (Flip flop flaps!)

What’s next for Miss Meghan?

Right now I am really focused on making Shoe Therapy on HSN a really fun show that women want to tune into not just to buy shoes but for all the other tips and trend info I give as well. I want it to be that show that you grab all your girlfriends and make a pitcher of Stiletto -tini’s and all watch together and discuss — we don’t have Sex and the City anymore so we need our shoe fix on TV!

And last but certainly most important-what are your favorite pair of shoes and why?

Omg. Everyone is sooo sick of hearing about these — my silver grey Azzedine Alaia Stiletto python platform pumps. I got them two seasons ago and am convinced they are about the perfect shoes. From the point of the toe to the rise to the heel silhouette -they just seem so perfect to me. When I put them on with anything from jeans to a really hot dress, I just feel so confident and strong and sexy.

That is the power of the shoe.
