Styleaholic Blogger Interview–Andrea Pippins’ Fly Girls

April 24th, 2007

Styleaholics, this is truly one of my favorite blogs and Andrea Pippins is lovely! She is truly a blogger’s blogger. Enjoy FLY GIRLS..I certainly do!

How and why did you start blogging?
I started blogging because I wanted to do something with my collection of inspiration research. I had books and folders filled with color exploration, trends research, and magazine clippings I collected over the last few years and I really wanted to share them. I thought if these visual elements inspired me maybe others could enjoy them as well. Then as Fly began to grow it became more about me wanting to inspire young women to be creative. Now, that’s become my ultimate goal with Fly.

What is YOUR DEFINITION of a Fly Girl?
My definition of a Fly Girl is a women who does what she wants to do whether it’s dressing the way she wants to, setting her own trends, or pursuing her dream job despite criticism. She’s also creative and wants to share her life with others. That’s it.
How do you choose to feature the fly girls on your blog?
The Fly Girls I have chosen are women that I admire. A few have been young women that were either nominated by a friend, or they’ve nominated themselves. I really try to choose a woman who has a career in the creative industry or does something artsy and creative on the side so she can expose another young woman to a career or activity she may not have considered.

Who to you are the ultimate FLY GIRLS AND WHY?
Wow, how many can I mention? My mom is the number one Fly Girl in my life. You (Najwa), of course! Most of my girlfriends who all seem to be on the path of doing all that they want to do in life. Rakia, who is doing her own clothing line among many other fabulous things, Rahil who is exploring photography, and Sarah who taught herself how to play the bass guitar and now has a very popular band. Marita Weseley-Clough, who is a brilliant trends specialist at Hallmark Cards, she’s super smart and really knows her stuff. They all inspire me. I would be here all day naming them all.

You cover inspiration and design–what made you decide to cover these topics and how do you cover it differently from another person?

I cover these topics because it’s what I know best and they are two things that make me smile. The way I cover these topics is so specific to me which in turn makes my coverage-style different from someone else. I do a lot of little illustrations to present things that I like. I feature things that I do and no one will have the same perspective as me, so that’s what makes my posts different.

What are your 3 favorite blogs to read?
It’s always changing but right now it’s, AfroBella, UptownFlavor, and Treats and Treasures

What is your current monthly readership?
I have a little over 10,000 visitors a month.

You’ve recently jumped into video blogging? Why? And what can we expect coverage of?
I thought it would be fun to take the same concept of sharing inspiration but present it in a live action video format. I also feel it’s a fun switch from the photos and collages I usually do, it adds another dimension to my blog. In the future, I will cover boutiques, art exhibits, and studio visits.

What’s next for you and Fly Girls?
More webisodes, more ways for Fly visitors to interact with one another, and more resources for creative inspiration. But mainly more fun.
